IamGenerationY

Hello Generation Y...

well, i think that Sarah's initiative is great. I wouldn't have joined if i didn't. But i do think that the whole "Generation Y" concept is a little too overrated by us, and too underrated by other generations.

So, since we are all gen Yers here, let's take a humility approach. We'll have time to talk about our greatest creations (because I DO believe that that's or greatest strength), but right now i want to ask you:

What do you think are our greatest flaws? What should we improve?

We should really come to terms with this. We can praise ourselves later.

so, what do you think?

Hi Carlos - Thanks for joining :-)

I am not sure that the concept is "overrated" by us... many people have never even heard of the concept "GenY" - a quick google proves that- all you get is some articles from employers wondering what to do with the arrogant up-starts that have just walked into the office ;-)

In terms of flaws - the main one that I would point to is our attitude to "get what we want and now". We don't have the same respect for "earning your way" or "working for things" as Gen X. This is a flaw that is going to be challenged now that the economy and job market are not so secure...I experienced this personally recently when I decided I wanted to change jobs and expected my company to bow down to my every demand or I threatened to leave...I soon realised that considering friends are losing jobs all over the place - at this point I should be happy to have a job and not rock the boat just because I have some frustrations.

And that is another flaw that Gen Y have...pure intolerance of frustration...we can't stand being frustrated for 5 minutes so we push change - but this can also be a good thing.

Flaws are subjective...but I would count these 2.

Well, that's true. Maybe i think that since in the US the concept is so popular, that happens also in every other english speaking country. I'm probably wrong about that.

But i do think that sometimes we are a little "too" proud of our gen Y membership, if that's possible. What i mean by this, is that i've seen a lot of young people feel like they are so awesome just because they are Yers, when actually they have none of the ambition or motivation that we do.

I pretty much agree with the flaws that you mention, but you can see that my question goes to all those Yers that don't have the positive qualities that some of our generation has.

I agree totally with the subjectiveness of flaws in general. And just to be clear, i consider myself one heck of a Yer, and proud of it :D
